Realizing there is a tooth missing can be horrifying, whether it has come lose through high impact sports, an accident, or as the result of gum disease. Thanks to restorative dentistry, however, there are things that can be done about it.

What is Restorative Dentistry?

Restorative dentistry is the art of repairing a person’s smile through the management of oral health problems. Problems that can be fixed include missing teeth, crooked teeth, and discolored teeth. Gum recession while usually permanent can be controlled with regular treatments and the aesthetics of the mouth improved with oral surgery.

The goal of restorative dentistry is to preserve the health of the natural teeth as much as possible and then to enhance appearance and prevent further damage to the oral cavity when this is not possible.

Options for Replacing Missing Teeth

There are several options for replacing missing teeth:

Fixed Bridges

The most common type of bridges (artificial teeth) are supported on either side by natural teeth. It’s less invasive than having full dental implants but the adjacent teeth will have to be ground down and attached to the bridge.

Maryland Bridges

With this type of bridge, healthy adjacent teeth don’t need to be reduced as it has attachments on each side to secure it in place.

Removable Dentures

Partial dentures are available for the loss of one or two teeth as well as for all the teeth. It is not painful to have them fitted although they can fall out or cause differences in speech.

Dental Implants

Dental implants are artificial tooth roots that are surgically implanted into the jaw. These tooth roots provide the placeholders for bridges. Dental implants can last for years and they look the same or better than a person’s natural teeth.
